![]() It is a monster set of music played at the Cinderella Ballroom in Detroit, a city that served as the band’s second home. One of the best live albums of any type is the classic J Geils Band album, Full House. Are they the best American bar band in rock ‘n’ roll history? The case could be made. A charismatic frontman, an enigmatic and reserved guitarist and a punishing rhythm section are similarities enough. The Rolling Stones would qualify as a bar band in some definitions, and it is sometimes said that the J Geils Band was the United States’ answer to the Stones. There are high concept album bands like Pink Floyd, Genesis, ELP and Yes, and then there are bar bands. Hardly anyone stateside else even comes close to Tyler or Wolf, and if you want to take that Gene Kelly, Ken Berry, Danny Kaye polished song and dance man into the rock idiom, it’s hard to imagine a non-instrumentalist frontman on either side of the Atlantic that put in a more accomplished or energetic performance than Peter Wolf from the J Geils Band. If there has ever been a better American front man in that tradition, it was from another band out of Boston, Aerosmith. In the classic strutting-with-a-straight- stand rock star avatar established and defined by Robert Plant and Mick Jagger, America had no finer offering in the category than Peter Wolf. Seth Justman joined on piano and organ in 1969, and that lineup would hold steady for 14 years and as many albums. Wolf had a band at the time - The Hallucinations - and was particularly fond of their drummer, Stephen Bladd Wolf proposed to bring him along into an amped-up, ramped-up version of what the J Geils Blues Band was already doing. A fast-talking DJ named Peter Wolf from the Bronx arrived in town and landed a job at Boston’s brand-new FM radio station, WBCN, and when Wolf heard the J Geils Blues Band at a Cambridge club one day, he saw the future. Fans of the band can probably guess these accompanists were Magic Dick and Danny Klein. ![]() J Geils himself was an acoustic slide guitarist who was popular in the Cambridge folk scene around that time, playing in an eponymous blues trio with a master harmonica player and an acoustic bassist. The J Geils Band formed in Boston, Massachusetts in the late ‘60s.

There is an exquisite scene not far into the film where the various students are eavesdropping on Li Qin and her maidens as they appear in a field with the maidens twirling and dancing on the end of what look like long trains of purple silk that trail down from the sky as Li Qin gracefully descends from above.Ĭhing creates amazing sequence like two of the women fighting in the forest, dancing and flying through the air in a series of graceful movements, twirls of silk and flights along on top of their swords. ![]() This is a world where the moon fills most of the sky, where fields and misty lakes come in an airbrushed hyper-real beauty that make you gasp. The enhanced budgets and access to CGI give Ching Siu-Tung the ability to create a fantasy world that his films back in the 80s and 90s never did. Bi Yao (Meng Meiqi) and Zhang Xiaofan (Xiao Zhan) Tian Linger (Tang Yixin) As soon as we reach the school/monastery, this becomes a slapstick scene watching pieces of food bouncing from one person’s mouth to the next in a slow-motion juggle. Ching’s visuals are breath-taking from the opening moments where the credits play out against a montage of scenes with the Dazhu Peak students flying through the clouds and conducting romantic moves in mid-air. Despite this now being another whole era, he adapts to the modern Chinese-made Wu Xia film like he had never left and brings the consummate skill and expertise he did to the classic films back in the 1980s/90s heyday. Jade Dynasty was Ching Siu-Tung’s first film as director in eight years since The Sorcerer and the White Snake (2011). (A full list of Ching Siu-Tung’s films as director is at the bottom of the page). In the 2000s, Ching seemed to step away from the director’s chair and preferred to spend his time as an action choreographer with Zhang Yimou on Hero, House of Flying Daggers and Curse of the Golden Flower (2006), even Uwe Boll on In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale (2007). (For a more detailed listing, see Wu Xia Cinema).Ĭhing Siu-Tung was a director during the heyday of the 1980s Wu Xia film where he made classics such as A Chinese Ghost Story and its sequels, Swordsman II (1992) and The Heroic Trio (1993). This saw a body of new imitators such as The Banquet/Legend of the Black Scorpion (2006), Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame (2010) and sequels, Flying Swords of Dragon Gate (2011), The Monkey King (2014) and sequels, Zhongkui: Snow Crystal and the Dark Crystal (2015), League of Gods (2016), Sword Master (2016) and others, which reimagined the older films on epic budgets that made a virtue of lush cinematography, costuming and set dressings, while reworking the flying wirework with CGI. Traditional Wu Xia died away at the end of the 1990s with the handover of Hong Kong back to China only to undergo a lush, dynamic revival a few years later with Chinese-backed works like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) and Zhang Yimou’s Hero (2002) and House of Flying Daggers (2004). Wu Xia was a genre created in Hong Kong in the 1960s and popularised during the 1980s with wildly fantastical films such as Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain (1983), Mr Vampire (1985) and A Chinese Ghost Story (1987). Now however he must deal with the forces of the Demon Cult. Zhang is placed into the tournament as a replacement fighter for Dazhu Peak and surprises everybody when he ends up becoming a champion thanks to the stick. The girl Bi Yao comes and connives Zhang in an effort to try and take the stick from him. This now emerges and takes the form of a stick that is energised by his blood and acts to defend him. While Zhang was abandoned as a child, a master placed a secret bead inside his head. The schools are about to hold the tournament they do every sixty years where the pupils compete. Zhang tries to practice kung fu like the others at the school but is treated as a dogsbody. Zhang Xiaofan is an orphan that have been adopted as a child by the Dazhu Peak school after his whole village was slaughtered by the Demon Cult. ![]() There are seven mountain peaks each containing a different kung fu school. ![]() Quest for Infamy is played using an interface almost identical to the one employed by the VGA version of Quest for Glory I. I chose the brigand path, which allowed me to fight my way through most situations. This choice changes how you approach the game, how combat works for you, and which quests / puzzles you have to complete, and so it's a key cog in the game's replayability. The first thing you do in Volksville is choose one of the three classes for your character, either brigand (melee fighter), rogue, or sorcerer. Weeks later you end up in the town of Volksville, which conveniently (and just like in Quest for Glory I) is surrounded by forests and other places for you to visit. ![]() You're not out for glory you're not even out for infamy that I noticed, but self-gratification and self-preservation, sure. Yeah, that's the kind of character you're playing in the game. You quickly announce that it isn't your fault - that the girl "tricked" you - and then you flee out an open window, leaving the girl to fend for herself. As the game opens up, you find yourself in a bedroom with the daughter of a baron - and with the baron right outside trying to break down the door. In Quest for Infamy you control a character named William Roehm. Better yet, the games had wonderful writing and humor, and so it's no surprise that people have shown a willingness to shell out their hard-earned cash to see more titles like them (and it's also a possible reason why Activision recently resurrected the Sierra brand and announced a new King's Quest game). The Quest for Glory games were built using Sierra's basic adventure game engine, but they added in combat, skills and attributes to form adventure-RPG hybrids, which were not only unique at the time, but they're still unique today. Quest for Infamy is a nod to Sierra Online's Quest for Glory franchise, which consisted of five games released between 19. So far the kickstarter games have mostly been adventures, but a wave of role-playing games is on the horizon, with Quest for Infamy leading the pack. ![]() The word for today is "nostalgia," which, according to Merriam-Webster, is defined as the "pleasure and sadness that is caused by remembering something from the past and wishing that you could experience it again." In other words, nostalgia is the kick in many kickstarter projects, and it's the main reason we're starting to see a lot of '80s and '90s PC games make a comeback. ![]() In addition, repeated use can cause the band to stretch, rendering it obsolete. It also tends to shift back and forth when the strings are played, causing them to bend. Strap-on capos do present some problems as the basic band system has a tendency to loosen, causing the pressure exerted on the strings to weaken, creating all sorts of strange sounds and effectively putting the strings out of tune. It is one of the few capos that stretches uninterrupted all the way around the neck. It is attached to one end of the clamping bar, then secured on the other side by a buckle to create the tension that holds the strings in place. The clamping mechanism is held in place by a material strap or band that sits on the underside of the neck. Strap-On CapoĪmong the different types of capos, the strap-on capo is generally the cheapest available due to the minimal design and low cost of the components involved in making it. It is up to you to determine which suits your needs best, though we recommend keeping in mind the functional aspect of each design and how easy it is to use. There are other types, but these tend to be less common. There are three main types of capo, each with its own qualities and attributes. The core concept of the capo is, therefore, functional. They are generally favoured by acoustic guitar oriented music, but are increasingly popular in other styles of music, notably ones that employ techniques such as tapping or technical passages. With a padded side wrapped around the underside of the neck, the capo makes sure the guitar isn’t damaged.Ĭapos work equally well on electric and acoustic guitars. With a capo these are much easier to perform.Ī capo is fixed onto the fretboard just above the desired fret and applies pressure on each of the six strings simultaneously, in the same way a finger would do if it was held in the same position. Essentially, normal tuning requires complicated finger positions to ring out certain chords. The chords are also much easier to play with a capo due to the tonal shift it provides. This is turn allows players to play chords with different tonal qualities because the tuning of the guitar is essentially moved up. When the position of the nut is shifted, the scale length of the strings is made shorter, allowing the pitch of the open strings to change without having to completely re-tune the guitar with the machine heads as is customarily done. The reason a musician may want to do this is simple. The capotasto, therefore, alludes to any accessory capable of temporarily changing the position of the nut on the fretboard. ![]() The nut is a small inlay that sits at the top of the neck, just below the headstock and guides the strings to the machine heads, which then determine the tuning of the strings. The above listed capos are dependable and will not damage your guitar if used correctly.Historically, the capo was called a capotasto, which is an Italian term signifying head fret, or in modern vernacular, the nut. I hope you were able to choose a capo suitable for your needs. The innovative technology used by the G7th Performance 3 is worth it in my opinion. Are they worth it? Well, they fulfill the exact same purpose, so it’s up to you. Some never capo designs from small manufacturers sell for $50-$70. Strap capos can cost as little as $5, but even the Kyser quick-change capo is under $20. ![]() How much should you pay for a capo?Ĭapos are some of the most inexpensive guitar accessories. Get a good quality capo like the G7th, Shubb, or the Kyser, and you’ll be able to use them on acoustic and electric guitars. I have never felt the need for a specialized capo. In fact, I have only used such interchangeable capos during my 20+ years of playing. Yes, many capos are designed for use on all types of guitars. You can find capos designed for acoustic guitars, electric guitars, flat fretboards, curved fretboards, nylon strings, steel strings, etc.Ĭan you use the same capo on different types of guitars? ![]() What’s the difference?Ĭapo manufacturers have developed different capos for different types of guitars. That’s where we may be tempted to take someone’s ideas as our own-plagiarizing someone else’s academic, professional, or creative work. Our insecurities can also make us feel like we aren’t good enough. If the feeling is intense enough it can make us desperate to have the things we envy in others. When we are confronted daily with social media documentation of our friends’ good fortune-the sparkling engagement ring, the shiny new car, the luxurious vacation, even the fancy brunch you missed-we can start to feel like we’re missing out. We may be trying to remedy the feeling that we don’t have enough. It may come from a sense of lack or the need to fill a gap inside. The impulse to take something that isn’t ours often comes from a deep emotional place. Research shows that people don’t always take things because of need. (I couldn’t pull off a heist if you paid me.) But when we think of the third yama more deeply, we may find we have some work to do. When it comes to the yogic principle of asteya, or non-stealing, we feel comfortable that we aren’t breaking-and-entering or robbing banks. But she knows I don’t condone stealing in real life. So perhaps they’re not the role models I want for my kid. Yes, these are, technically, thieves and they are, in fact, stealing. I love watching a group of clever con artists develop a twisty, sophisticated plot to dupe some semi-villainous mogul out of a rare jewel or a priceless painting.
